Earlier, McIlroy made a superb putt at the par-three 4th to move up to 12 under. The Northern Irishman then drilled his drive over the corner of the par-four 9th, played a delightful wedge into the green which spun off the back bank and down towards the cup and then holed the putt for another birdie to move to 14 under.
Rose also made a birdie at the 3rd to move to seven under, while McIlroy was on fire with his approach shot into the 1st. The Northern Irishman drained his tee shot into the left side of the green and then rolled in the putt to give himself a three-shot lead over the pair trailing him.
