The Middle East conflict continues to develop, with a number of important events creating new dynamics in relations between the parties. One of the main points of concern is the tension between Israel and Palestine. In 2023, a series of airstrikes by Israel on Gaza caused heavy casualties, including women and children, sparking a strong reaction from the international community. These actions emphasize the Palestinian position in fighting for their rights, where the Hamas group once again strengthens their arguments against oppression. On the other hand, the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran also created a significant impact. After more than a decade of tension, the two countries announced an agreement to reopen their embassies in the first half of 2023. The move provides new hope for regional stability, although the risk of confrontation remains, especially regarding Iranian influence in Yemen and Syria. The conflict in Syria remains one of the most complicated problems affecting geopolitics in the region. In 2023, with negotiations taking place under the auspices of Russia and Türkiye, there are signals that some opposition groups are willing to engage in dialogue with Bashar al-Assad’s government. However, many observers doubt whether a deep political solution can be achieved, especially given the presence of various factions with different agendas. Meanwhile, concerns about ISIS activities have re-emerged as sporadic attacks have occurred in Iraq and Syria. Although ISIS’s strength has declined, the group has shown resilience by carrying out coordinated attacks, taking advantage of political instability in the region. On the other hand, the normalization of relations between Arab countries and Israel has also entered a new phase. The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed a normalization agreement marking a new era for Arab-Israeli relations. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go considering the protests and responses from the Palestinian people who feel marginalized in this process. The economic aspect also cannot be ignored. The consequences of the conflict, coupled with the global energy crisis, worsened the economic situation in many Middle Eastern countries. Rising energy prices and inflation are critical issues that are exacerbated by political instability. Tensions in the Mediterranean Sea are also increasing, related to territorial disputes between Türkiye and countries such as Greece and Cyprus. The discovery of marine gas reserves also intensified this rivalry, fueling tensions that continue to this day. These latest developments show that while there are opportunities for reconciliation, the complexity that exists in the Middle East makes it a region that continues to adapt to multi-layered challenges. In the future, the role of superpowers in mediating and resolving conflicts will be very important, and the international community needs to remain sensitive to the changes occurring in this region.
