As the atmospheric temperature increases, a lot of water vapor accumulates, which eventually falls as heavy rain. For example, tropical regions now experience much more intense rain than several decades ago. This phenomenon contributes to deadly flash floods. Apart from increasing rainfall, global warming also causes faster evaporation of water from the ground and surface waters. This reduces water availability in some areas, however, when the rain comes, the soil cannot absorb water properly due to prolonged drought. As a result, water pools and causes flooding. Climate change also affects river flow patterns. This manifestation of climate change can be seen in many of the world’s major rivers, where flood seasons are becoming more unpredictable. This has a direct impact on communities living near rivers, disrupting daily life and damaging existing infrastructure, such as roads, houses and bridges. In addition, coastal areas experience more severe impacts due to rising sea levels. Cities such as Jakarta, Bangkok and Miami are now struggling with the impact of flooding caused by higher sea tides. These regions not only have to prepare for flooding from rivers but also from the sea, creating a double crisis that is difficult to overcome. Agriculture has also been significantly impacted. Flooding damages agricultural land, which can cause major economic losses for farmers. With repeated flooding, land becomes degraded, and food production is threatened. This has the potential to cause food shortages and significant increases in food prices. Climate change not only affects the environment, but also public health. Widespread flooding becomes a means of spreading disease. Contaminated water during floods can result in outbreaks of cholera, typhus, and other waterborne diseases. More vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are often the main victims. Mitigating the impact of flooding due to climate change requires collective action from the government and society. Investments in infrastructure capable of withstanding flooding, such as higher dams, drainage channels and better stormwater management can help reduce the risk. In addition, replanting mangroves and other coastal vegetation can absorb the impact of sea waves. Public education about climate change and its impacts is very important. Awareness of preventative measures, such as avoiding construction in flood-prone areas and the need for evacuation during floods, can save lives. The existence of a training program regarding flood emergency response will increase community resilience in facing this extreme event. Overall, the impact of climate change on global flooding shows that this issue requires serious attention. Without concrete action, the future of humans and the environment will be threatened, and we must immediately adapt and reduce the impact.
